Advantages of Arduino are
1. It is inexpensive and easily available in online as well as offline market.
2. A lots of sensor are available for making various projects.
3. It is easy to programm arduino. A beginner can also program buy following tutorials and videos on YouTube.
4. Because of its popularity a lots of videos and tutorial is available on YouTube and internet.

Comparison
Arduino is a good microcontroller but a lots of other microcontrollers such as ATmega328P and Raspberry Pi are in market with a lots of new features while some of them like intel microcontrollers are for specific purpose.

But for basic purpose you should go for Arduino, otherwise you can choose from a lots of microcontrollers which you like.

it s also a microcontroller like others, an atmel provided chip in it , the hardware helps to learn and make embedded projects in simple programing languages (C/C++,etc..)

it have larger community for building unlimited resources and for being answer the questions on the forums on the internet ,   also makes programer and microcontroller in one board and it also makes user friendly / beginner friendly .
