Presence of branching increases the surface area for doing 'things' , In lungs for exchange of gases, In kidney for exchange of waste, etc.
Infact it increases the Surface area so much that for e.g. our lungs which fit inside our small rib cage have the surface area of a tennins court. This would mean that oxygen would be absorbed more in quantity and efficiently.
