It is a lot easier to use especially to set up sampling equipment especially microscopes, atr and reflection apparati. Signal averaging gives better spectra and it is easier to quickly change resolution. With 1 bounce and 3 bounce diamond atr cells I could measure a spectrum of almost any solid or liquid material in minutes without any sample preparation. The instantly digitized spectra make comparison of spectra extremely facile and data base searching easy.
One area a dispersive instrument is better is working at a single frequency to study reaction kinetics.
