Gas thermometer contains hydrogen, helium and nitrogen. It contains a fixed quantity of gas and any change in the pressure is  used to measure the temperature. Similarly,  It can contain gas with fixed pressure and any change in volume is used to measure the temperature.

Gas thermometers can be very accurate, to within

0.005 oC from 0 oC to 100 oC,

0.1 oC around 500 oC

and to within 2 oC at 1500 oC

Liquid thermometer uses mercury. At high temperatures, mercury is pushed upwards but when it goes above the construction, it cannot return to the bulb. It also solidifies  at -38.83 °C (-37.89 °F) and thus making it possible to use at higher temperatures.
