'The Adventure of the Priory School''

A troubled man, Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable, the founder and principal of the Priory School, shows up at Holmes's Baker Street office, imploring the detective's help. A student - a very notable student - 10-year-old Lord Saltire, the son of the Duke of Holdernesse, has disappeared in the night. Also missing? The school's German master, a man named Heidegger, and his bicycle.

Huxtable tells Holmes the boy was a ''charming youth,'' but ''not entirely happy at home.'' It seems the Duke and Duchess had a rather rocky relationship and had mutually separated; the boy's ''sympathies are known to have been strongly with his mother,'' though he resided with his father. His father sent word through his secretary, James Wilder, that his son was being enrolled in the school right away.

The doctor tells Holmes he doesn't see any connection between the boy and the missing German master, and makes notes of a letter that had arrived for the boy from his father the very day of his disappearance.
