The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has proven to be very light. I found it surprising how Tom manages to run away. He says he wants to be a pirate and then goes off to really make that happen. Tom is nothing if not persistent, he will not give up until he has what he wants. This is not a bad quality to have, in fact it does come in handy for Tom many time throughout the story. He did this in the very first scene of the story. Tom is given the Job of white washing the fence but does not want to do it, not only does he make other boys do the job for him but he has the boys that are doing his chores pay him for the opportunity, he then gets all the credit and praise from aunt Polly. Later Tom goes and convinces his friends to run away and be pirates with him, and then when Tom decides he wants to go home they all go with him. Tom is a leader not a follower, and I believe he will continue this way throughout the rest of the story.

Tom is a playful and
cunning young boy who is 12 years old. He knows how to get his things done
through his friends. This can be seen by the way he got his friends to
whitewash the fence that his aunt told him to. He was also clever enough to
make sure that he did not have to pay them for this. Instead, he made them pay
him different things to try their hand at the task. Another striking trait is
that he always likes to lead his friends and not follow them. His bossing over
his friend Huckleberry Finn is the best example of this. The fact that he is
game for any kind of adventure is shown by his ability to convince his friends
to join him to become pirates.
