Advertising isn't evil and it's only necessary based on your particular perspective. The joke has been made recently that toilet paper commercials are not necessary... because everyone uses toilet paper. But to the big companies like Charmin and AngelSoft, the commercials are not there to direct your attention to the existence of toilet paper, but to the existence of their toilet paper. They want you to buy theirs.
Man if companies could do without paying for advertisements.... I'm sure they think of it as evil in that respect. But it's been a provably essential tool for our modern capitalist society. There are a lot of companies, products, and people out there. The competition is stiff not just in quality, but in quantity. Some companies get along fine without advertising at all... typically they rely on word-of-mouth or the fact that they clutch the majority of the market anyway. Some companies seem desperate... for example I'm getting really tired of seeing Game of War's app commercials on literally every conceivable mobile venue.
Also consider how much we rely on Google's services... Google was built directly upon the back of the advertisement business and continues to get revenue this way primarily. Without those advertisements you see on YouTube or Facebook, it is likely that that we would not have such powerful and comprehensive services provided by giants like Google today.
I'll tell you now that as an art student I have many peers and mentors in the field of advertising too. It's an art and a science and most notably, an occupation! So I'm sure ad-graph majors are not so privy to the idea that advertisement is evil.
Obviously it's a love-hate relationship. It can be annoying or entirely informative. Mostly the former in my experience, but I have had some very specific instances of the latter.
