Aeration is the process of bringing water and air into close contact.

This is done for the following reasons :

a) provision of oxygen to bacteria for treating and stabilizing the unpurified water.

b) decarbonisation : reduction of carbon dioxide

c) Air stripping : reduction of concentrations of volatile organics, such as chloroform, and dissolved gases, such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.

Aeration process can be done by -

introducing air to water, or water to air.

Based on this, the two main categories of aerators are given below :

(NOTE : aerators are mechanical devices used for aeration)

Air-Into-Water Aerators

1) Pressure aerators

2) Centrifugal aerators

Water-Into-Air Aerators
