According to the analysis of the genetic distance and the clustering method there are three types of genetically different lamprey found in the North America.

They are

• In the lake Champlain, anadromous population are found.

• In the Lake Erie and the Upper Great Lake, population are found and the last population is the type of the populations found in the Lake Ontario and three interior New York Lakes .

• Ammocoete hatchling is the larval phase of the crude jawless fish, called as the lamprey or Petromyzon. Grown-up lampreys generate in streams and then die
• The young hatchlings, ammocoetes, go through quite a long while in the waterways, where they live tunneled in fine silt, channel benefiting from garbage and microorganisms. then ammocoetes experience a metamorphosis lasting several months
