Affinities of petromyzon:

After some examination, by the use of starch gel electrophoresis at 23 loci in the 21 populations of the petromyzon or sea lamprey, some genetic differentiation are found.

According to the analysis of the genetic distance and the clustering method there are three types of genetically different lamprey found in the North America.

They are

  • In the lake Champlain, anadromous population are found.
  • In the Lake Erie and the Upper Great Lake, population are found and the last population is the type of the populations found in the Lake Ontario and three interior New York Lakes .

Features of Petromyzon

Explanation:

  • Those that are anadromous are savage, carnivorous from fishes or marine warm blooded mammals
  • Anadromous lampreys occurs in the ocean before moving back to freshwater, where they spawn such as by moving rocks, and females release thousands of eggs
  • Ammocoete hatchling is the larval phase of the crude jawless fish, called as the lamprey or Petromyzon. Grown-up lampreys generate in streams and then die
  • The young hatchlings, ammocoetes, go through quite a long while in the waterways, where they live tunneled in fine silt, channel benefiting from garbage and microorganisms. then ammocoetes experience a metamorphosis lasting several months
