The African lungfishes belong to the genus Protopterus and there are four species of lungfish constituting to this genus that are found in Africa.

The most common species of African lungfish is the West African lungfish, also known as the Tana lungfish or as Protopterus annectens. It is found in a wide range of freshwater habitats in West and Middle Africa, as well as the northern half of Southern Africa.

African lungfishes are elongated, eel-like fishes, with thread-like pectoral and pelvic fins with soft scales and fused dorsal and tail fins.

African lung fish is called as Salamander Fish. Today there are only six known species of lungfish which are living in Africa as it's clear from its name, South America and Australia. The most interesting thing about them is their substantial size. The Australian lungfish may grow up to a length of 4 feet and weigh up to 10 kg. Lung fish eat a variety of aquatic animals like frogs, tadpoles, earthworms and many small fish. Lung fish have primitive lungs like those of amphibians through which they can breathe atmospheric air at the water surface.
