• Let present age of son be (M) years

and

• Present age of father be (N) years

CASE 1)

» After 5 years, the age of a father will be triple the age of his son.

A.T.Q.

→ (N + 5) = 3(M + 5)

→ N + 5 = 3M + 15

→ N = 3M + 15 - 5

→ N = 3M + 10 __________ (eq 1)

____________________________

» 5 years ago, he was 7 times as old as his son.

A.T.Q

→ (N - 5) = 7(M - 5)

→ N - 5 = 7M - 35

→ N = 7M - 35 + 5

→ N = 7M - 30 _________ (eq 2)

____________________________

Subtract (eq 2) from (eq 1)

→ N - N = 3M + 10 - (7M - 30)

→ 0 = 3M + 10 - 7M + 30

→ 7M - 3M = 40

→ 4M = 40

→ M = 10 (age of son)

Put value of M in (eq 1)

→ N = 7(10) - 30

→ N = 70 - 30

→ N = 40 (age of father)

Age of son = 10 years

Age of father = 40 years
