It’s like when you wash something that’s covered in dust and you hold it under a shower of water and just watch it dissolve down the drain. If the shower is long enough and hard enough it will wash all the dirt away and make it nice and clean. It should stop smelling like dirt as well.
The falling rain binds to dust still in the air and brings it down. By wetting the soil, it also prevents more dust from getting airborne
