After a short stay in England, where Rabindranath had gone to study law,
he settied down in the peaceful surroundings of his rural home, began to write
in Bengali and soon made a name for himself. He was a great lover of
children, truth, courage and simplicity. He was a lover of fine arts, too.
In 1901, Tagore founded his famous school Shantiniketan at Bolpur. This
school became a well-known centre of education. It has now become a
University and is famous all over the world as a great seat of learning,
Tagore looked like a great Rishi of ancient India with his flowing silvery beard.
Mahatma Gandhi rightly called him 'Gurudev'. Tagore's fame spread all over
the world with the publication of the collection of his poems known as
'Gitanjali'. He was awarded the Noble prize for it in 1913. He was the first
Indian to get this prize which is given to the world's greatest authors and
scientists. It was nearly a lakh of rupees which Tagore used for Vishwa
Bharati
, his school.
This great poet, patriot and teacher of mankind passed away in 1941.
