After a vigorous exercise, the body cells need more oxygen to gain up energy. We start breathing faster to fulfill the need of body cells but that isn't enough. So the mscle cells start respiring anaerobically giving rise to lactic acid that causes muscle cramps. That's why after vigorous exercise it is advised to drink water or any energy drinks.
