Cost price of watch = Rs 500

Given:

After allowing a discount of 10% on marked price shopkeeper charges Rs 540 for a watch.

If no discount then profit would have been 20 %

To Find:

Cost Price of watch

Solution:

Assume that Cost price of watch = 100C  Rs

Profit = 20% if no discount

Profit = (20/100) 100C = 20C  Rs

Marked Price = 100C + 20C = 120C Rs

Discount = 10%

Discount = (10/100) 120C = 12C  Rs

Selling Price = 120C - 12C  = 108C  Rs

108C = 540

=> C = 5

=> 100C = 500

Hence, Cost price of watch = Rs 500

Correct option is b) Rs 500
