"After Blenheim"
is an anti war poem which was written by an English Romantic poet laureate Robert
Southey in 1796. It conveys the message of futility of war. The battle is not
described directly. It is through the conversation
between an old farmer and his grandchildren that it becomes known that the
setting is a former battleground. Peterkin finds something 'large and round', so
his grandfather explains that it is a skull, and many of them could be found in
the earth nearby. He says that it is some poor fellow's skull who fell in the
great victory.
