After cardiac death ( when the heart stops beating) - if organ/tissue donation is to be done after cardiac death the time of organ removal is kept as short as possible to ensure that organs function well after being transplanted into a recipient. -
brain cells remain alive for a few minutesskin cells for 24 hoursmicro-organisms in the intestines for a few daysIn case of brain death (with heart still beating and optimal opportunities for organ transplantation) the non-living donor can be kept on ventilator support almost indefinitely and the tissues (cornea, skin, bone) and other vital organs can be kept completely alive and functional till they (heart, lungs, liver, kidneys) have been surgically removed or until consent has been given to remove life support.
