After dipping a blue litmus paper to the H2O used to washing clothes, a student suggest his mother not to use soap why?

He advised his mother not to use soap because the water was hard.(Permanent hardness).Since soap is a fatty sodium acid, it would react with calcium salts in the water to form white PPT which would then fail to wash the clothes. Detergent would be a good substitute.
