After the dissolution of the Lok Sabha, Speaker continue to hold the office till immediately before the first meeting of the newly elected Lok Sabha. On the dissolution of the House, although the speaker ceases to be the member of the Lok Sabha, he/she does not vacate the office.
The speaker vacates the office immediately before the first meetings of the newly constituted House.
In the First meetings of the newly elected Lok Sabha, a temporary Speakers presides the meetings, which is known as Speaker Protem.
In this First Meetings only, permanent speaker of the Lok Sabha is elected.
The Majority party of the Lok Sabha after consulting with the opposition party proposes the name of the of the candidate for the office of the speaker.The leader of the opposition seconds the name so proposed. The election of the Speaker only starts when the majority party and the opposition party disagree over the issue.
The Speaker is Elected unanimously.
Sh. G.V. Mavlankar was the First Speaker of the first Lok Sabha of India.
