Lactic acid is what causes muscles to burn after strenuous exercise. ... ATP is the energy source muscle fibers use to make muscles contract. Some of the reactions in converting glycogen to ATP take place without oxygen, and when this happens a compound called pyruvate is produced.

Lactic Acid

When we do excercise our cells and muscles do some physical work.

For this work energy is required

This energy is released by the aerobic respiration, when we do intense excercise we don't take breath so no oxygen reaches our body and anaerobic respiration takes place.

Due to aerobic respiration lactic acid is secreted in muscle cells.

presence of lactic acid causes pain.
