After joining the army, Milkha began his athletics training in earnest with his coach Havaldar Gurudev Singh. He ran barefoot as he did not have running shoes or track suits. All he had was his enormous will power. Guided and motivated by his coach Milkha ran on the hills, the sands of the Yamuna River and even against the speed of a metre gauge train. When he spoke about this later on, Milkha said, 'I would race against the metre gauge trains that criss-crossed the Secunderabad localities such as Bolarum and Cavalry Barracks. Milkha Singh worked hard and pushed himself so

much that there were days when he fainted on the track due to exhaustion. On occasion, he even vomited blood during his training, but never gave up.
