The Kalinga war took place in 261 BC.It was Ashoka's first and the last war.

*It was the bloodiest and mightiest battle in the Indian history.Thousands of people on both sides lost their lives. The ruler of Kalinga was also killed.
*This battle added one more province to Ashoka's huge empire.
*But it proved to be a turning point in his life.
* Ashoka could not withstand the cries of the wounded and that of the relatives of the dead.
*So,he decided to give up warfare forever.
*He adopted Buddhism and emphasised upon the policy of Ahimsa.
*He gave up meat eating and banned hunting of animals.
*He also gave up the luxurious life and started working round the clock for his subjects.
*He built hospitals for men and animals, planted shady trees on both sides of the roads and built inns for the stay of travellers.

So,the Kalinga war proved to be a turning point in the life of Ashoka. After that he adopted the policy of Dharam Vijay instead of Digvijay.
