this is because the speed of sound is less than speed of light..

hope it helps you

apexjitendra: here distance is asked
apexjitendra: not the theory that sound is slower than the speed of light
apexjitendra: Lightning reaches the observer with a very large speed, i.e., with the speed of light (3 x 108 m/s).Thus,the entire time of 4 s between the seeing of lightning and hearing of thunderstorm is taken by the sound to travel to the observer.Hence,distance of the thunder cloud i.e. s = vt = (340 m/s) (4 s) = 1360 m = 1.36km.

Here sound travel from medium air .
So the speed of sound in air is 342m/s.
Distance = speed * time
Speed =342m/s
Time = 4s
Distance = 4*342
=1368 metres.

ronit80: you are wrong d=(v*t)/2
kunal0404: Its not echo
kunal0404: Sound is reaching towards our ear directly
