No of pages read=7x/9

No of pages left  =Total no of pages - no of pages            

$= x - \frac{7x}{9 } \\ \\ = \frac{9x - 7x}{9} \\ \\ = \frac{2x}{9}$

We know that 40 pages is left.

$\frac{2x}{9} = 40 \\ \\ 2x = 360 \\ \\ x = \frac{360}{2} = 180$

So, the total number of pages in the book is 180.
