Let the number of pages in the book be x

No of pages read=7x/9
No of pages left  =Total no of pages - no of pages read
                           =x  - 7x/9
                           =2x/9           [LCM].................(1)

Given that number of pages left is 40,so euating it to (1) we get:

∴2x/9=40
  2x=360
x=360/2=180

So the total number of pages in the book is 180
