Explanation:
The poem was written by Adrienne Rich in 1951. In the poem, the poetess has described that how a women living an unhappy married life uses art to get a mental relief. So, we can say that voice of women was suppressed by men at that time when divorce was not an option for women.
But it can not be said for present era. Today women enjoy equal rights as men do in most parts of the country and divorce is no more a taboo.
It is true that the voice of women is suppressed by the institution of marriage. This suppression is quite prevalent particularly in India. Most of the women are forced to lead a life quite similar to Aunt Jennifer.
All the household chores are done by mothers; from morning till late night everyday women slog like servants. The male members don't lend any helping hand in doing these chores. Children also don't help their mothers making excuses.
In foreign countries the condition of women might be better; but in India their condition is pathetic.
