When Griffin returned to his room after the burglary at the vicarage he found Mrs. and Mr. Hall inspecting his empty room curiously. He got angry and decided to scare them. Invisible as he was he began lifting the articles in the room, which to the Halls was a scary phenomenon. Firstly the bed-clothes leapt up at them followed by stranger’s hat dashing at Mrs. Hall’s face. Then, the chair accompanied by the laughter resembling the stranger’s laughter charged at her forcing her and her husband out of the room. This is how Griffin scared the Halls out of his room.
