After the 73rd Amendment to Constitution, a uniform system of Panchayat Raj institutions were brought into existence by the Indian government throughout the country. This system was brought into practice to enable decentralization of power. The Panchayat institutions also got constitutional status this way. As per the amendment, a three tier system of Panchayats came into practice. They were Grama Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat. These Panchayat institutions follow the principles of democracy.
