During the Civil War Douglass, a Radical Republican , tried to persuade President Abraham Lincoln that former slaves should be allowed to join the Union Army . After the war Douglass campaigned for full civil rights for former slaves and was a strong supporter of women's suffrage .Frederick Douglass fought for what he believed in.

Frederick Douglass became an activist in the civil war to abolish discrimination of the blacks. In the post war period he ensured the citizenship and non discrimination in voting grounds of the blacks in the 14th and 15th amendment act. After Civil War he indulged himself to fight for the equality of the African Americans and the women. As he gained huge fame in the Civil War period he also served as the President of the Reconstruction era Freedman's saving bank.
