The 1878 Indian Forest Act divided the forest into three categories :

a. Reserved forest

b. Protected forest

c. Village forest

In reserved forests, only British Official people were allowed to enter.

In protected forests, British officials and some high posted Indian officials were allowed to enter

In village forests, the tribal people were allowed to enter only upto a definite extend.

Hope it helps.
