In 1970, Norman Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in developing high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of wheat. The "Green Revolution", launched by Borlaug's "miracle seeds", is often credited with having transformed India from "a begging bowl to a bread basket", and the Punjab is frequently cited as the Green Revolution's most celebrated success story. Yet, far from bringing prosperity, two decades of the Green Revolution have left the Punjab riddled with discontent and violence. Instead of abundance, the Punjab is beset with diseased soils, pest-infested crops, waterlogged deserts and indebted and discontented farmers.

Green revolution impacted the decline of pulses and many farmers adhered to the farming of wheat rather than pulses.

Explanation:

  • During green revolution, there was an introduction of High Yielding Variety seeds which had made the wheat production enormous when compared to the pulses.
  • Punjab and Haryana faced a steep decline in production of pulses because many farmers saw profits in the production of wheat and it was of great demand in other countries.
  • Wheat exports made the agriculturists to earn a huge profit. Both bristly grains and pulses were not chosen by the farmers for planting because of its decline in demand.
