Before the rebellion of 1857, British army in India had 1 British soldier for every 9 sepoys.

After the struggle British saw this as problem and reduced the number of sepoys. Recruitment process also changed. Initially, the sepoys were from Brahmin and Rajput castes.

However, these were the areas from where most of the rebellions came.

Hence, due to the fear British started recruiting sepoys based on castes.

They employed Sikhs and Muslims from North-west, who had helped them against the rebellions.
