After the War of 1812, the United States was seen as a greater military power because they were not defeated in the war.

When two or more nations are involved in a war, the ones who were defeated would be required to pay back every loss that was made in the war to the ones who won.

This would lead to an economic growth for the winners and would consequently cause an economic depression for the defeated nations.

Thus, by not being defeated in the war, United States automatically gained power, economically and politically as a great power which could influence other nations.
