Concept:

The amount of work and the required time for a similar number of men is directly proportional to each other, i.e. greater the amount of work is,  more time is required for that.

The number of men and the amount of work in similar time are direct proportional to each other, i.e. less number of men do less amount of work in same time.

Given:

4 men dig 1 hole in 4 hours.

Find:

1 man can dig how many holes in 8 hours.

Solution:

4 men in 4 hours dig 1 hole

1 man in 4 hours dig 1/4 hole

1 man in 1 hours dig 1/(4*4) = 1/16 hole

1 man in 8 hours dig = (1/16)*8 = 1/2 hole.

Hence 1 man can dig half of a hole in 8 hours.
