I find the trick with these is to set it up exactly as the problem states, then (and this is important) check the answers to see if they make sense. When you check: do all of the different parts line up (in his case is the mother 3 times OLDER than the daughter?, etc)
let D=daughter’s age
3D= Mother’s age (because the word “of” means to multiply and Mother is 3 times the age of the Daughter)
and in 4 years after they BOTH increase in age by 4 years, their ages will add up to 60:
(D+4)+(3D+4)=60
Solve for D to get the Daughter’s age, then multiply by 3 to get the Mother’s age (as stated on the problem)
