Answer:

Let the common multiple be x.

So, ages of friends will be 2x, 3x.

After five years, their ages will be 2x+5, 3x+5

According to question,

2x+5+3x+5=40

5x+10=40

5x=40-10

5x=30

x=30/5

x=6

2x=2*5=10, 3x=3*6=18

Therefore ages of two friends are 10 and 18 years.

Answer :–

  • Age of first friend = 12 years.
  • Age of second friend = 18 years.

Solution :–

Let,

  • The first friend be 2x.
  • The second friend be 3y.

After 5 years,

Their ages will be,

  • First friend = 2x + 5
  • Second friend = 3x + 5

And the sum of their ages after 5 years = 40

→ (2x + 5) + (3x + 5) = 40

→ 2x + 5 + 3x + 5 = 40

→ 5x + 10 = 40

→ 5x = 40 – 10

→ 5x = 30

→ x =  \frac{\cancel{30}}{\cancel5}

→ x = 6

Now,

✏️ Age of first friend = 2x = 2 × 6 = 12 years.

✏️ Age of second friend = 3x = 3 × 6 = 18 years.
