and younger one be y

• Their ages differ by 20 years.


x - y = 20

x = 20 + y .......... ( i )


• Five Years ago their age will be
The age of Elder one :- ( x - 5 )
The age of younger one :- ( y - 5 )

° Five years ago the elder one be 5 times as old as the younger one.

( x - 5 ) = 5 ( y - 5 )

x - 5 = 5y - 25

x - 5y = - 25 + 5

x - 5y = - 20 ...... ( ii )

Putting the value of x from ( i ) in ( ii )


x - 5y = - 20

20 + y - 5y = ( - 20 )

- 4y = ( - 20 ) - 20

- 4y = - 40

y = 10

Putting value of y in ( i )

x = 20 + y

x = 20 + 10

x = 30

So,
the present age of Elder one is ( x ) :- 30years

and the present age of younger one ( y ) :- 10 years
