The viceroy during 1876 to 1880 was lord Lytton whose aggressive policy of masterly inactivity and followed towards Afghanistan. He presented his aggressive and luminous views before the legislative council in Calcutta. Anglo Afghan war was the result of this policy of lord Lytton in 1878
