In 1990 a full census of agriculture was conducted to obtain volumes of livestock on farms, as well as volumes for crop and horticulture production, and animals born during the year ended 30 June 1990. Some financial and employee information was also collected. The previous full census (ie, all farms surveyed) was conducted in 1987. In 1988 and 1989, small farms were excluded, but their values were estimated based on data from their previous census return, and on data from larger farms. Farms were selected for survey based on details from the Department of Statistics Agriculture Register.
