A large portion of India is full of highly fertile land. Moreover, India is a densely populated country and hence needs food grain production on a large scale. The monsoon climate of India is highly favourable for farming. Hence, agriculture is the main economic activity in India.

  • Agriculture is an activity of growing crops, fruits, vegetables, flowers and rearing livestock.
  • Agriculture is a primary sector activity because It involves producing raw materials from Natural Resources. These raw materials are sent to factories for further processing.

More than 46% of the total Indian Population is engaged in Agriculture. Agriculture is done on a large scale in India because:

1. India has many perennial rivers. These rivers bring Alluvial soil from Mountains to the plains. Soil is very fertile in Northern plains. So, Agriculture is best suited there.

2. India is a heavily populated country. India requires a lot of food grains to feed its population. So, Agriculture is intensively practiced here.

3. Monsoon climate in India is highly favourable for Agriculture.

4. South India contains fertile black soil that is suitable for Cotton cultivation and also a variety of crops.

5. South Indian Rivers like Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi, Mahandi, Godavari for Deltas that are highly fertile and suitable for cultivation.

6. Himalayan rivers like Ganga have many tributaries. Canals are built along these tributaries and water is drawn from it for Irrigation.

7. Other factors such as cheap labour, market, capital, transport facilities, cold storage facilities, implementation of latest tools and technology in Agriculture resulting in Green Revolution, White Revolution, etc...

           - All these contribute to the Development of Agriculture.
