The walled city of Ahmadabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 1411 AD on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati River. It continued to flourish as the capital of the State of Gujarat for six centuries. The old city is considered as an archaeological entity with its plotting which has largely survived over centuries.
