The First World war had the following features:-
1. It was fought between the Allies - UK, Russia, France and USA and the Central Powers - Austria Hungary, Ottoman Turkey and Germany.
2. It started in August 1914 and lasted for more than 4 years.
3. It was the first large scale industrial war. It saw the large scale usage of artillery, tanks, guns, and other modern machinery.
4. The destruction caused was enormous - 6 million dead and 9 million injured.
5. Industries were restructured to produce war related goods.
6. Societies changed. Earlier, those jobs that were done by men were started to be done by women.
7. The workforce of Europe decreased because most of the killed and maimed were able bodied men of working age. As a result, household incomes declined.
8. The economic links between various countries snapped as each now fought each other to pay for them.
9. During this time, Britain took a large amount of loans from the USA.
10. The war transformed USA from an international debtor to an international creditor.
