⭐What is Cyclotron?
A device that is used to accelerate positively charged particles ( like protons, deutrons, alpha particles and certain other heavier positive icons ) to desired very high energies (or, velocities).
⭐Principle: A positively charged particle can be made to accelerate to large energies/velocities by making it pass through a moderate value of electric field, a number of times. This can be done with the help of a strong perpendicular magnetic field.
⭐Theory : When a charged particle of mass m an charge q enters a magnetic field, B, with a velocity v in a direction of the magnetic field, B, the charged particle will move in a circular motion where, the centripetal force is provided by the magnetic force and the radius of this circular path attained will be:
r = (mv)/(qB)
The period of revolution of the charged particle will be,
T = 2pir/v = (2pim)/(qB)
Thus, the frequency of revolution of the charged particle will be:
f = (qB)/(2pim) = (v)/(2pir) = cyclotron frequency
⭐Construction:
1) There are two D-shaped hollow evacuated metallic cylinders, D1 and D2, made of highly conductive materials. These dees are placed horizontally, diametrically opposite to each other. They are slightly separated from each other.
2) These dees are then connected to a high frequency oscillator which gives equal and opposite polarity to the dees at any instant of time. However, this polarity keeps on getting reversed regularly.
3) This entire arrangement is placed in a strongly sealed vacuum box so that air molecules may not collide with the charged particle.
4) The dees are kept between two very strong electromagnets. Thus, the two dees are placed in a magnetic field perpendicular to them.
5) The source of positivity charged particles that are to be accelerated is placed near the center of the dees.
6) The charged particle is then pulled out of the dees with the help of a deflecting plate, out of the window, W.
Thus, the direction of the electric field is horizontal and the direction of the magnetic field is vertical.
⭐Limitations:
1) A cyclotron cannot be used to accelerate electrons because electrons are of very small mass. Thus, the velocity will be increased to such a great extent that the electron will be thrown out of the step with the oscillating field.
2) A cyclotron cannot be used to accelerate neutral particle.

Answer:
A cyclotron is a type of compact particle accelerator which produces radioactive isotopes that can be used for imaging procedures. Stable, non-radioactive isotopes are put into the cyclotron which accelerates charged particles (protons) to high energy in a magnetic field.
