Answer:

In place of 4 and 8 she had to write 5 and 7

Step-by-step explanation:

15 + 21 = 3(4+8)

Substituting (4+8) by (5+7)

15 + 21 = 3(5+7)

36 = 3*5 + 3*7

36 = 15 + 21

36 = 36

Given : Aida applied the distributive property to write the equivalent expressions below. 15 + 21 = 3 (4 + 8)

To Find : What is Aida’s error

Solution:

Distributive property

a( b + c)  = ab  + ac

15 + 21 = 3 (4 + 8)

LHS

= 15 + 21

= 3 * 5  + 3 * 7

ab + ac  = a( b + c)

a =  3   , b = 5 , c = 7

= 3(5 + 7)

But she wrote

= 3( 4 + 8)

This is Aida error

Aida did not correctly divide by the common factor to get (4 + 8).

However final result is same

as 3(5 + 7) = 3(12) = 36

3(4 + 8) = 3(12) = 36
