Aiden has fourteen coins that add up to $5. They are made up of 50-cent coins and 25- cent coins. How many 50 -cent coins does he have?

Let the number of 25 cent coins be 'x' and number of 50 cent coins be 'y'.

According to the question,

Total number of coins = 14

Total Value of coins = $ 5

⇒ x + y = 14 ...(1)

⇒ 0.25x + 0.5y = 5 ...(2)

Solving these both equations we get:

⇒ x = 14 - y  (From (1))

Substituting this in (2) we get:

⇒ 0.25 ( 14 - y ) + 0.5 y = 5

⇒ 3.5 - 0.25 y + 0.5 y = 5

⇒ 0.25 y = 5 - 3.5

⇒ 0.25 y = 1.5

⇒ y = 1.5/0.25

⇒ y = 6

Hence the number of 50 cent coins is 6.
