Tyres have to be filled with air, for the following reasons:

Assuming that the tyres are filled with solid instead of air the following problems may arise, as we know that solid is a good conductor of  vibrations, so when a car passes over a bump the vibration are transmitted easily to the person sitting in the car but that is not the case if the tyres are filled with air.

The solid tyre would wear out more quicker than the one filled with air due to the friction , and also the maintenance cost of solid tyre is higher, these are the reasons which makes us to use air tyres
