Air expands on heating because hot air molecules takes more space than the cooling molecules or the normal molecule.

The air is less dense than the than the surrounding matter because the hot or warm air is lighter in weight and hence expands or takes more space to compress.

If we compress both type of air one us hot and one is cool air during hot air it takes more energy to compress it while in cold air it takes less energy.

We use hot air in hot air ballons because it is light in weight and expands more than the cool air.
