cold air is more dense . means that here you can pack more molecules of oxygen into a smaller space . if you have more molecules in a smaller space you have a greater pressure on that space however ,the air as a result becomes more compact .
As the molecules in heat move faster they are moving apart .so the air ,like most the other substances ,expands when heated and contracts when cooled . because there is more space between the molecules , the air is less dense then the surrounding matter and the hot air floats upward .
