The presence of unwanted and harmful materials in the air is called air pollution.

Sources of air pollution -

1) Burning of fossil fuels releases CO2 and other harmful gases into air causes air pollution.

2) Industries releases smoke containing many harmful gases.

3) Automobiles release harmful gases of nitrogen and sulphur.

Causes of air pollution -

1) Air pollution causes many disease like Asthma, bronchitis and respiratory disease.
2) It may lead to irritation of eyes and throat.

3) Polluted air kills plant and trees by damaging their leaves.

Effects of air pollution

1) CO2 released from burning of fossil fuels increase the amount of CO2 in the air which increases the temperature of the atmosphere.
this is called global warming.

SOURCES
There are four main types of air pollution sources:

1. mobile sources – such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains

2. stationary sources – such as power plants, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and factories

3. area sources – such as agricultural areas, cities, and wood burning fireplaces

4. natural sources – such as wind-blown dust, wildfires, and volcanoes

CAUSES
1. Burning of Fossil Fuels: Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles is one the major cause of air pollution.

2. Agricultural activities: Ammonia is a very common by product from agriculture related activities and is one of the most hazardous gases in the atmosphere. Use of insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural activities has grown quite a lot.

3. Exhaust from factories and industries: Manufacturing industries release large amount of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and chemicals into the air thereby depleting the quality of air.

4. Mining operations: Mining is a process wherein minerals below the earth are extracted using large equipments. During the process dust and chemicals are released in the air causing massive air pollution.

5. Indoor air pollution: Household cleaning products, painting supplies emit toxic chemicals in the air and cause air pollution.

EFFECTS
Respiratory and heart problems: breathing problems like asthma

Global warming: Another direct effect is the immediate alterations that the world is witnessing due to Global warming.

Acid Rain: Harmful gases like nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides are released into the atmosphere during the burning of fossil fuels.

Depletion of Ozone layer

Effect on wildlife

PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Use public mode of transportation: Encourage people to use more and more public modes of transportation to reduce pollution

Understand the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Use energy efficient devices: CFL lights consume less electricityas against their counterparts. They live longer, consume less electricity, lower electricity .
