His total capital=5900

Let x be the number of Rs500 note and y be the number of Rs200 note.

As per the question, he have 16 notes in total

Also
500x+200y=5900_____(2)

Solving (1)and(2)
Since we need only number of Rs200 notes(y), let us eliminate 'x'

From(1), x=16-y____(3)

Substitute (3) to (2)
500x+200y=500(16-y)+200y=5900
500*16-500y+200y=5900
8000-300y=5900
300y=8000-5900=2100
y=2100/300=7

Thus , Ajay had 7 Rs.200notes

To verify:
If he had 7 Rs.200 notes, he had 9 Rs.500 notes
7*200+9*500=1400+4500=5900
